Phuket Guide
Getting Around Phuket
Although Phuket is the largest island in Thailand, getting is around is quick and easy. As most of the best beaches and resorts are located on the west coast of the island, most visitors will find there are several transport options readily available to them.
Taxis and Tuk Tuks
All of the Phuket beach resorts offer a plentiful supply of inexpensive taxis and tuk tuks that can be hired for short journeys or on a daily basis, if you would like to tour the island.
Taxi’s will generally be air conditioned and offer a higher level of comfort than the tuk tuks, although many people enjoy getting the wind in their hair with the uniquely Thai mode of transport, offered by the famous tuk tuk.
Taxi and tuk tuk rides from Phuket Town to the beach resorts will take around 15-20 minutes.
For shorter trips it is also possible to jump on a motorbike taxi. This is a very quick means of getting around but not always the safest method of transport – you should always wear a helmet, regardless of how short the journey.
Buses
Buses operate from the bus terminal in Phuket Town to all of the island’s many beach resorts. Costs are very inexpensive and journey times are no more than 45 minutes, regardless of your destination.
There are bus stops in all the major resorts with frequent daily services.
Renting a Vehicle
Many visitors like to explore Phuket for themselves and by far the best way of doing this is to hire a car, jeep or a motorbike.
There are numerous rental companies dotted around Phuket Town and the main beach resorts, while vehicles can also be hired from Phuket International Airport and most large hotels.
Roads in Phuket are generally in good condition and very safe, although exploring some of the interior of the island may involve dirt tracks. A good four wheel drive jeep is a great option for getting around in all conditions, while a motorbike should allow you to see just about everything Phuket has to offer.
If you are feeling energetic, there are also several companies that have mountain bikes available to hire and some companies can organise cycle tours of the island.
